Physiotherapy Modalities:

IASTM: (Instrument-Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilization)

What is IASTM?

IASTM is one of, if not the most, effective physiotherapy technique to treat soft tissue dysfunction. When the body is injured, the body’s immune response tries to prevent further damage by building up scar tissue to repair the wound as quickly as possible. Scar tissue forms in an irregular pattern within a wound and has little functional strength. The affected area may now have limited range of motion, pain and the skin may appear non-uniform. IASTM is performed using a stainless steel tool to break up scar tissue and trigger a focal inflammatory response. The inflammation helps the body to absorb the scar tissue and produce new collagen at the site of injury.

Does it hurt?

Pain is quite common with this treatment, as the treatment induces inflammation. It is common for most patients to explain it as a “good hurt”. Almost immediately after treatment there usually is improvement in flexibility as well as a decrease in pain. Certain injury sites may be more painful with the other. Common side effects may include local discomfort, redness and occasional bruising.

Will it work?

The effects of IASTM include pain relief, increased flexibility, increased strength, enhanced recovery, and in most cases complete resolution of symptoms. Many conditions have been successfully treated using IASTM within a short number of treatments. IASTM has been known to increase recovery time and prevent scar formation post surgery.

MRT: (Muscle Release Technique)

What is MRT? MRT is a soft-tissue/movement based technique that can treat muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves that have been overworked. Many different conditions can be resolved quickly and permanently with MRT. The technique is performed by the provider hands. After locating and evaluating the specific tissue being treated, the provider precisely puts tension on that tissue and moves the tissue through its full range of motion or through a specific movement.

What is SpiderTech© Taping?

SpiderTech© tape is a hypoallergenic non-medicated cotton kinesiology tape that you apply to your body wherever it hurts. Each Spider is made of one continuous piece of Kinesiology tape so that it integrates with the body in a super-functional manner. The tape has a very specific elasticity built into the weave pattern of the cotton fabric, which mimics the elasticity and thickness of human skin, allowing it to integrate, support and stabilize without adversely affecting healthy ranges of motion.

How does SpiderTech© Work?

SpiderTech© achieves its therapeutic effect naturally by either providing structural support or by altering the patient’s sensation of pain which is dependent on how the tape is applied.

Structurally, if the tape is stretched and applied over muscles in a shortened position it will provide a mechanical barrier to potentially harmful postures and ranges of motion.

On a neurosensory level, SpiderTech© helps to normalize the alterations in neurological signaling that occur after injury or as a result of chronic pain.

The tape provides enhanced sensory stimulation which essentially disrupts and diminishes signals of pain. What is revolutionary about this is the effect of the continuous stimulation provided by wearing SpiderTech© on the skin may help to break the cycle of chronic pain.

The bottom line is a decrease in the sensation of pain along with normalizing the neural drive to the muscles involved resulting in restored mobility and strength. SpiderTech© therapy means less pain and more activity for more people.
